I recently discovered two online comics that are of some damn good quality. Being relatively new to the online comics scene, I'm just now finding out about a lot of the great stuff, which is few and far between.
Penny & Aggie cracked me up on several occasions. It gave me both that nostalgia love I have for the strip format and engagment of mature level storytelling. I'm a little tired, so I'm not going to give out a full on review but you can check it out here: www.pennyandaggie.com/ . They have a collection that can be purchased through lulu.com's print-on-demand site. When I have some money again for that stuff, I'm definitely going to order a copy.
Alpha Shade is just WOW, in terms of visual quality. At first, with the earlier pages, I was a bit turned off by the "Big Eyes Small Mouth" look of the characters ( personal taste - all the shitty manga and anime that's out there has left a bad taste in my mouth ), but as the story progresses, so does the art, or at least it moves away from the BESM look - which is good for my personal aesthetics. But even with the earlier pages, the art still blows my stuff out of the water - especially in the background department. My god. It's all original stuff too. No templates or anything. Not to mention the technical drawings of tanks and airplanes. Storywise, I was a bit "meh", mainly due to my personal disdain for the BESM look, until the gun battle breaks out and kids ( BESM look makes them look 12 to me, their all supposed to be late teens early twenties ) are getting killed left and right. I went from being "meh", to "Oh my god, that kid just got killed!" I genuinly felt bad for all the people getting killed. And that's how they hooked me. A level of quality artwork that I myself am striving to achieve and a story with characters that I genuinely give a damn about.
There are some fantasy elements that are interesting. Telepathic cats, witches, and flying mounts. I can go with the first two, but the flying mounts I'm going to have to get used to. Just not my cup of tea. I don't know why, but for some reason I've never really cared for them, even on Lord Of The Rings. Don't get me wrong, every flying mount I've seen was pretty cool by itself, I just don't care for them. However, since they're telepathic and sentient like the cats, they are more interesting to me than the LOTR ones, though aesthetically I prefer the latter - more monstrous.
