Watching it at this moment while inking a page of the Clockman.
It's um...subtly fucked up. Discomforting. Very well made, for the most part well acted/written, but discomforting.
That's all I can say at this moment, bad things are about to happen.

Okay, there are two conclusions to be derived from this film ( without spoiling it for anyone ) : 1) Some people have all the luck, some have none. 2) Let nothing stand in the way between a man and his career. The statements of discomfort that I had for this film earlier I believe were the results of my then emotional state while encountering the situations that the characters were. In other states of mind I might have responded differently. One of the more interesting aspects of the film, for me, is how the men versus the women were portrayed. By my experience it was altogether very accurate, much to the chagrin of feminist idealism. I believe that most people, both men and women, would watch it and go "yep, that's how it is", but certain hardliners might be rather dismayed that, ultimately, the interests of all the women characters consisted of marriage and children - certainly some of them had their careers, but it seemed that their most crowning achievement, for themselves, was having children. I don't in anyway mean to shine a negative light on that desire/goal, my point is that a lot of feminist idealists might look at this as being stereotyping, and might accuse the writers of the film of denegrating women. Of course, one might state that the only thing that could come of my making this observation is to stir up people's emotions in a non-constructive manner. That may be the case, but it was what was crossing my mind as I watched the film. The soundtrack itself is quite lovely as well, making good use of the opera genre. It might be the state of mind that I'm in, but the one thing that kept this film from being GREAT, is that at moments the acting seemed to be off beat. Also, the way it was directed I was never able to get that feeling that I was being pulled into the characters so that I might actually care about them, something I think is needed for this type of story. It was a good story, but it could have been told better. So all and all, I give the movie the following ranking: J.

There's a third point that can be derived from this film:
3) Don't get involved with a married man who is also full of ambition.
